I was in Oakland last night and most of today. And the video is right on! Except there aren’t as many black people there. However, all my black friends do sound like sad country-western singers, so it’s cool!

i hate whiteguy “ironic” covers of rap songs. there’s something very pathetic about it, because the only way the person performing it or the person liking it (both white people) can bring themselves to enjoy the rap song—which in many cases, esp. california love, is an amazing song on its own—the only way they can enjoy the song is ironically, they won’t admit they like it and just be comfortable with that. and by turning the song into a comedy song, they’re mocking the artist and the genre, the whole culture, all of which happens to be black. it’s a pretty despicable business all around. when i clicked on this i was hoping to see the actual awesome california love song with its mad max-referencing video.

it also should be noted that the original song and video are so clever and self-consciously tongue-in-cheek that there’s no need at all for some lame whiteguy to come along and do his shitty johnny cash impression or whatever. yeah, you know what, this guy’s singing is horrible and not in a funny way, and the music is garbage as well. fail

That’s interesting. Total lesson in how reception depends so much on the receptors.

For my part I clicked play and switched windows so started hearing the song without the video and thought “who is this? i like the voice” – I didn’t connect to the original initially, having not heard it in years. Also, I’m not technically ‘white’. Nothing wrong with any of that. Finally, ironic white boy rap love is kind of nineties, no? does that still go on?

whats more powerful irony or nostalgia

whats more powerful race or irony

whats more powerful life or death

sometimes there is too much irony all piled up in the barn, and you have to pitchfork another steaming pile of irony on top of it all, and you have to pitchfork another, and another, and another

when the world is shit-streaked with irony that is when beauty will emerge

      love is irony

      purists sure hate farce

but pushing against things is the only possible way to live

      stephen:
tupac himself made the original into a comedy when he came out on stage looking like fucking mad max.

whats amazing about california love? it was easily one of pac’s shittiest songs he ever made and one of dre’s shittiest he ever produced.

if this song is amazing to you… what is a shitty tupac song?

but either way. who cares, he made a shitty cover. listen or dont listen but why pretend you have a personal investment and get all pissed off. just dont listen to it.

p.s. every cover i ever heard of billie jean is better than michael jackson’s original.

Kidding, Reynard! Don’t think for one second that if I was actually in Oakland I wouldn’t contact you. I know you don’t use condoms. I never do.

Hey, sounds fun. I’m going to be working when it starts, but if I’m not stuck at work too long maybe I’ll stop by. Just visited the myspace page of the French Ancestors — love that their influences include Syd Barret and Paul Wellstone.
