David Lynch, annoyed
I completely envy and despise Deborah Solomon, who does the one-page interviews with influential people in the New York Times Magazine (I know, I know, it’s far from an Independent press; bear with me.) She interviewed David Lynch (ah, there’s the Independent spirit) this week and I loved to see how much he hated her interviewing style. His first answer was an insult to her question, but then again, her question was an ignorant insult to his work. Do you really think he wants someone to watch Blue Velvet on their iPod? I mean, have you seen anything he’s made? Click here to read the interview in full.
“I hear you’re getting married again.
In February. I’m marrying a girl named Emily Stofle.
Is she an actress? Was she in any of your films?
She was just in one, “Inland Empire.”
You’ve been married three times before?
Yeah, it’s real great.
Why would someone who feels so generally blissed out marry so many times?
Well, we live in the field of relativity. Things change.”

Solomon always manages to irritate the piss out of whoever she’s talking to. Or at least it always sounds that way. Thanks for linking this. My favorite part:
>>What is that clock you’re holding in this photograph?
I just didn’t want to stand there like an idiot. It’s an old clock, but I am building this plastic bubble around it.<<

A filmmaker doesn’t have to suffer to show suffering. You just have to understand it. You don’t have to die to shoot a death scene.

i like this:
But Dali painted melting clocks, and yours isn’t melting, is it?
It’s not melting, no. But part of it is made of polyester resin, which at one time was liquid.

Someone told me the other day that he has a separate house outside his house for cooking, because he doesn’t like “cooking smells” in his house.
At college I saw him hook up a guy to a brain scanner thing to monitor his brain waves while meditating.
His foundation gave a girl I know a meditation scholarship.
When will he make another movie?

What a horrible interview. It’s great to read Lynch lashing out like that.

Has anyone here seen that documentary about Lynch called “Lynch One”? It feels very in-house, meaning people Lynch is friends with and knows made it, I thin. But it’s so fascinating and candid yet still mysterious. It mostly centers around the production and filming of “Inland Empire.” Near the beginning is maybe my favorite Lynch quote: “My childhood was elegant homes, tree lined streets, the milkman, building backyard forts, droning airplanes, blue skies, picket fences, green grass, cherry trees. Middle America as it’s supposed to be. But on the cherry tree there’s this pitch oozing out—some black, some yellow and millions of red ants crawling all over it. I discovered that if one looks a little closer at this beautiful world, there are always red ants underneath.” He’s something else. My favorite living artist maybe.

I don’t think this is a “bad interview.” It’s just a quickie, like a chat at a dinner party or something. Sometimes the interviewer is limited by a very small word count.
I’m not really familiar with Deb Solomon. Did she pee on someone’s coat or something? Please explain.
The one odd factoid I know about her is that she is mentioned a couple of times in the new Miriam Toews novel, The Flying Troutmans. More people should read Miriam Toews. She is seriously outstanding.

I´m in the DR and it´s been raining today- so I´m reading old posts here.
I´m really OK with not liking Deborah Solomon´s interview tecniques. Her interview with Joy Williams? And so many others…
