First City Review, edited by Michael Pollock, is in the last few weeks of accepting submissions for the next issue. May 31st is the deadline.( Click here to go to their website). They accept email submissions, they publish an ambitious variety of styles in fiction and poetry and they put out a beautiful journal. Send them your best stuff, people! I plan to.

Ack! Yet another journal that specifies low word counts for fiction. And print, even! I don’t mean to sound disgruntled. Oh wait, yes I do. I like flash fiction as much as the next knucklehead, but since I began working on longer form short stories (5 or 6k), I’ve noticed how few venues there are that claim no length restrictions. Now, when it comes to the web, I can sort of understand keeping it short (though I’m fully expecting a backlash from the “common sense” assumption that no one has “patience” for longer work online), I just can’t see the problem with publishing long stories in a print journal.

FCR Editors: Sorry about the complaint. I’m sure your rag is all that and a bag of chips. It just happened that the issue came up in this context.

you misread it and granted, it’s not clear. IN fact, I’m going to point that out to Michael- the 1500 word is in regard to the travel piece. I know, as they’ve published a short story of mine.

We accept submissions year-round in fiction, essay, poetry, criticism, review and travel. All work must be accompanied by an SASE and cover letters are encouraged.

Please send one piece of fiction, essay or travel piece (two is o.k. if fewer than 1500 words), and 3-6 poems to:

Hmm, okay. But you’re right: it’s unclear. I think most people reading would assume that the parenthetical stipulation would qualify the entire subject of the sentence, not just a part of it.

So you know for a fact that there isn’t a word limit on prose submissions?

      Ooo, thunder storm.

Wait. Now I get it. They accept two submissions if under 1500- otherwise, there is no word count. But I emailed him. Actually, on rereading. It is pretty clear.

And they do a great job. It’s a lovely, diverse journal.

i’ve been thinking of sending something, but i think everything i’d send is currently out to other places.

You know, I think he takes sim subs- because he doesn’t state otherwise on the website- but did you look at duotrope? Is that where they say no sim subs? I’m fairly certain that’s a booboo on dutrope’s part. Not 100 percent. But I’ll ask him.
You should send them something, Ryan.

  13. ryan

yeah, i just looked at their duotrope listing. if they do take sims i will definitely send something. of course who knows, rejections may roll in between now and the deadline and free some things up!

      (i’m so optimistic!)

The duotrope I’m fairly certain is a mistake.

Anyway, I’ll keep you updated when i hear back from him.

  16. ryan

sure thing, thanks for your proactivity!

i’m using a lot of exclamation points today.

Yeah exclamation points! I’m in a really good mood today even though my week was a waste of oxygen workwise. But hey! It’s thursday night! That means tomorrow is friday! Which means maybe next week will be better!!!!!!!

pr’s enthusiasm is infectious. I am excited about the fact that I just submitted to them. Why am I excited? Because! What a great day.

Great Mike! I wish you luck with your submission and with See Story Hear Story. Very good idea.

Should I stop using exclamation points yet? I hope not. It’s half an hour till cocktail hour here tonight. I ran five miles and then stood on my head and shit for an hour and tonight, I’m having cocktail hour.

  22. ryan

i too feel celebratory that it’s thursday. so close to a weekend, even if i only have saturday off this week.

So, I’m not mistaken, right, they want you to send prose AND poetry — like, every person who submits must submit prose and poetry, or is the *and* 3-6 poems just means, and also send poems to etc etc etc
