Roundup

This Wednesday Afternoon in May Triple-shot is brought to you by MIDNIGHT IN NOVEMBER

google image search for "nature is insane"

It is seeyerbreath cold in New York. Also raining. My friend in Denver says they got 3 inches of snow the other day. Dear Mother Nature, WTF!?!?! etc.

Speaking of Mother Nature and WTF, I can’t figure out why Crooks & Liars seems to be the only people to have reported this angle of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill–that the Gulf of Mexico is a major dumping ground for unexploded ordnance (UXOs)–ie bombs and stuff. BP WAS LITERALLY DRILLING IN THE MIDDLE OF A FUCKING MINE FIELD!

Anyway, enough of that. Over at something called Review Fix, Mickey Ehrlich extols the virtues of and provides some contexts for understanding Joshua Cohen’s Witz.

Last November, Sarah Palin spoke to Barbara Walters about the expansion of settlements in Jerusalem: “That population of Israel is going to grow…I don’t think the Obama administration has any right to tell Israel that the Jewish settlements cannot expand.” Israel makes such strange bedfellows. We Jews in America find ourselves building alliances with politicians whose wish is to corral us into the Holy Land, so the Messiah can return, and we sinners may repent or die.

In other news, have you checked out Pop Serial, edited by our own star commenter Stephen Dierks? The magazine can be downloaded for free right here. It features Tao Lin,  Joshua “the aforementioned” Cohen, Zachary German, Kendra Grant Malone, I. Fontana, Miles Ross, Donald Futers, Paul Edward Cunningham, and a whole lot more besides. So go get it, yeah?

Speaking of MIDNIGHT, here’s a little culture for nothing extra- What secret ministry do YOU perform?

I cannot wait to read Witz. I think it was you who said that Josh Cohen would be the next Joyce wasn’t it, JT? Because I could not agree more, the man is a miracle. A Jewish miracle, with all the scandal and brio of such a thing, as this new book seems to explore thematically.

      thanks, justin

Great job with POp Serial, Stephen.

  6. Brett

I really enjoyed Pop Serial. I was impressed with the amount of work Stephen invested into the magazine as well as the diversity of writing and art contained within, too. A second issue, I believe, appearing at some point around late summer/ early fall would be tight.

  7. Mike Meginnis

I hear my story in said magazine is “tight,” and also “dope.”

That is the word on the streets.

  8. Paul

Kudos, Stephen! You star commenter, you! :D

if anyone has specific comments about specific pieces in the mag, comment here and i will most likely repost them on the tumblr. there is an unconfirmed rumor that joshua cohen liked tao’s pieces, liked the photographs (apart from those ‘sillie fashiony photos’ [not a direct quote]) and that he found my piece to be ‘insane’ but he liked it.

I’ve only looked over it briefly so far. I feel like it’s worth waiting until I have the physical copy to read it through properly, so that I get the full experience (as intended by editor / auteur / star commenter S.T. Dierks). That said, I have had a quick digital scroll-through, and it looks pretty great. I’m looking forward to reading everyone’s stuff.

      Good work, stephen!

Sorry to see ZZZZZIPP’s distress, though. What happened? In fact, where did those comments go? Did I imagine them?

  70. Donald

Also, I think that the US’ support of Israel is kind of disgusting.

You cannot justify their behaviour in Palestine, morally speaking, without divorcing yourself from any semblance of rationality for the duration of the argument.

  71. demi-puppet

Is there somewhere where you can order physical copies??

  72. Donald

  75. stephen

thank you for your interest, demi-puppet. if you send your real name and address to stephen.dierks@gmail.com, i will add you to a list (which includes roxane gay) of people i will do my very best to get paper copies to once i have fulfilled my already existing obligations re: paper copies. thanks!

  76. stephen

oh and they are free. that’s why i can’t guarantee anything. i’m paying for everything, and i am not rich. thank you.

  77. Roxane

I have to ask, why are you giving the magazine away for free? How do you plan on sustaining the project? I have no doubt people would pay for the magazine.

  78. stephen

thank you for asking, roxane. i am doing it for free because i want it to be a “gift.” also, i thought it would make it more appealing to contributors and to readers. there’s nothing to stop them from getting the magazine or being in the magazine (re: the latter, they know i am not “profiting” from their work at all). and i promised at least 1 visual artist that it was free, bc otherwise he charges a licensing fee (altho i don’t know how big of a fee).

i’m glad you think people would pay for it. i don’t know… i guess since it’s always been free, it has to stay free now, in order for me to be true to my word or something. but thank you, glad to hear that.

as for sustaining…. it could be “one and done,” or what i think will happen is it will be an annual. i look at it as a rapper releasing a big posse mixtape, as opposed to a quarterly literary journal or something. but i am open to suggestions or whatever. i just wanted to put something out in the world with only things i like in it, and have it feel like one person kind of “directed” it all, even though there is diversity and a host of amazing talents involved.

  79. stephen

i guess if people feel like “buying me a beer” via paypal, that’s not like “wrong,” probably…. whatever though, i just wanted to “spread the love.” hopefully i’ve accomplished that somewhat.

  80. Roxane

I do respect your stance but wouldn’t the greater gift be able to do this regularly? I mean, free literature is fantastic but it’s certainly worth paying for as well. No one profits on magazines but charging certainly makes it possible to print and grow and do great things. Anyway, thanks very much for answering my question. I look forward to reading.

  81. demi-puppet

I like the idea of it being like an annual or semi-annual mixed CD. Makes it feel more personal and special.

  82. stephen

it was also intended as a “launching pad” for myself and the other unknowns, i’m sure i don’t even have to admit that, but yea.

those “unknowns, relatively speaking,” include Donald Futers, Leif Haven, Carrie Lorig (only relatively, folks, please don’t be offended), Jared Harvey, Blake West, Doug Flora…… et al. probably

  83. stephen

cool, thank you, roxane. i understand your point. i will think about it. i still think i’m kind of “stuck” re: this issue. i don’t think charging now would be very ethical, so i’m not going to do it. perhaps i could charge for future issue(s).

i envision Pop Serial issue 2 with a Tiger Beat-style cover featuring Jordan Castro.

(i also haven’t decided what to do with the magazine’s tumblr now that it exists. i am pondering “serializing” my “first novel.” i will definitely keep hyping people and things until all the print copies are out. we shall see…)

  84. stephen

i figured the limited-edition aspect and the ribbon binding make it a unique thing.

  85. demi-puppet

I have a Borders gift card, I think I’m going to order and to Witz the next fiction book I read. Intriguing.

  86. demi-puppet

You know, a publication that only publishes chapters of serialized novels would be pretty cool. Have any recent lit journals ever done this?

  87. mimi

Jeez, Roxane, give the guy a break. Must you always be so contrary? He wanted to do it for free. I think it’s nice.
(And, I downloaded it. Am looking forward to reading it very much. I thank you, stephen.)

  88. mimi

That picture! Insane! That’s why I studied Biology.
      Sometimes exclamation marks are necessary!!

  89. jereme

i agree with roxane. but i will put it more plainly.

stephen, why should any of us give a shit about your journal if you show tangible form of commitment?

in other words, how is your turd different than all the other “special edition” turds tao lin & his hip apostles have participated in?

why should i give a shit?

      but, hey, it’s free.

      rock on.

  90. jereme

i believe those are the japanese spine crabs. i witnessed them at my first awp in chicago with sam pink & gena mohwish.

they are very interesting to watch.

  92. Donald

oh wow, yes. bring back the serialised novel. that seems like it could even be the kind of thing that might get people excited about literature again, if you spun it right. it could work brilliantly with the whole internet / blogroll / temporal stream / zero attention span paradigm.

  93. Roxane

Mimi get off my damn case. I was asking a measured, legitimate question which he answered. It’s a reasonable question to ask why someone is doing something for free. It’s not a judgment and I’m pretty sure Stephen, who can speak for himself, knows that. Why must you be so contrary?

  94. stephen

roxane has said supportive things in emails. i won’t speak for her, but i took her comments as constructive feedback as opposed to criticism. thank you, mimi, i’m glad!

jereme, i wouldn’t pretend to tell you what you should or shouldn’t give a shit about. rock on.

  95. stephen

cool… yeah, i might do it. seems like there is “synergy” via the existing title.

  96. ZZZZZIPP

  110. mimi

I am a reader who likes to purchase as many books and journals as her modest income will allow. This Free Introductory Offer Pop Serial is like those little paper cups of free tastes of cole slaw at the deli counter at Park & Shop. If I like the way it tastes, next time I’ll probably buy some.

This doesn’t even take into consideration the “gift” aspect that stephen has expressed, and which I think is sweet. And extremely generous. The soft sell always works way better on me than the hard sell, but that’s just me.

(Actually, don’t be tryin’ to sell me no cole slaw. Those little free taste samples scare me. As picky as I am about what I read, I’m even pickier about what I’m willing to put in my mouth, taste and swallow.)

  111. jereme

have you read “frowns need friends.” yet?

      jereme-
That sounds really sweet, and you have my word that the next time I order from Amazon (which I sometimes do – sorry reynard) I will also order “Frowns Need Friends”. (I’m “a little” familiar with Sam Pink from exploring the internets.) Over $25 and I don’t pay shipping!

PS – I just checked SPD, since I live near them and could pick it up there, but they don’t have it.

      you can be number 1.

      email me.

As picky as I am about what I read, I’m even pickier about what I’m willing to put in my mouth, taste and swallow.)

      jereme-
That sounds really sweet, and you have my word that the next time I order from Amazon (which I sometimes do – sorry reynard) I will also order “Frowns Need Friends”. (I’m “a little” familiar with Sam Pink from exploring the internets.) Over $25 and I don’t pay shipping!

PS – I just checked SPD, since I live near them and could pick it up there, but they don’t have it.

      Hey jereme-
Sorry I didn’t reply sooner, but I was “running out the door” – I had a class to teach this evening – and didn’t see your last comment.
And, since last I commented, I ordered (among others) “Frowns Need Friends” from evil Amazon. But thank you so much for your offer and the good vibes. I’ll let you know (somehow, somewhere, someday) how I like the book.
