What a strange amalgam of texts. Some of the selections seem out of place: Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”; Philip Roth’s “The Counterlife”; Art Spiegelman’s Maus I & II?

Other of the selections are strange for their seemingly purposeful but unnecessary obscurity. For instance, of all Delillo’s work why choose “Great Jones Street”? Same with the Robert Coover and Kathy Acker selections, as well as many others.

I wish the author of the list (Carolyn Kellogg) would have defined her interpretation of the word “postmodern”. As it stands, it seems that what she’s done is compile a list of “books she thought were weird” and labeled them postmodern.

How could they leave out Don Quixote? The book Don Quixote is in the book Don Quixote, and it drastically effects the story line drastically.
