Here is what kills me- the irony?- for lack of a better word right now, of poets being complete money grubbing sleazebags. When one thinks of poetry- and I am completely disabused of this thinking of course- one thinks of “heart” and “soul” and a certain…..goodness? Purity, emotion…And- the reality? My neighbor, a well published poet, makes her money being a scumbag divorce lawyer and also has a side business as a slumlord. And she walks around , thinking of herself, as a poet. She’s also a complete and utter bitch, who is incapable of even the most remote human kindness. But she’s a poet!!!!!

Ah, Nate, but do you take as much money as you can from poor African American retirees in Mississippi and never fix their broken plumbing? And do you make is possible for fathers to hide all of their earnings from the mothers of their children? And do you treat every person you meet with naked malice? I doubt it.

Totally. I agree with you pr.

I wonder if things in the world would be different if poets had money or if poets didn’t have to worry about money? Money makes people–even “poets”–do weird things. But to come back to something else I noticed in your comment pr: Just what should be the expectations we should have of poets–or of people who call themselves poets–in a capitalist culture?

Well, my expectations of poets is the same as for all other people, and having spent time with family in Communist Germany, my expectations are the same for capitalists as for communists- I just wish they weren’t soullesss assholes. And some aren’t! And some are.
