The Tyrant has posted an uncollected Gary Lutz story ‘In Kind’ from their NYT issue 3 today at Vice. “I had no friends, just timid emergency contacts. I married the second woman to come along.” Also worth checking out, an excellent interview with the stoner-Manson-looking Alan Moore.

The fine prose is why it’s worth reading, and that starts up pretty early. There are awesome moments throughout but the book really should have been shorter (or perhaps longer, with a better ending included).

If you’re not into it by page 20, give up. Then congratulate yourself for saving yourself a month of your time.

[I was in the middle of writing a comment on the 2666 thing but the shit disappeared, so i’ll just put it here]

To be honest, if you weren’t into The Savage Detectives, you’re most likely not going to be into 2666. It’s a slightly inferior version of The Savage Detectives, I think. It’s similar but lengthier and with passages (especially a lot of the final section) that needed to be edited down (and apparently therewas a whole sixth section that they recently found, so you’re not even getting the full unedited text anyway). I think the middle section of Detectives is one of the better things Bolano did, so I think that’s why people were telling you what they told you.

I’d go with Last Evenings on Earth (the title story in particular) or trying to get to the middle of The Savage Detectives to see if you’re into him. There are definitely BIG and HUGE parts of 2666 but you have to get through of other stuff to get to them.
