I wonder what Juked feels about Sotto Voce‘s design.

I don’t understand. They don’t look the same.

I see definite similarities, though Juked’s layout is much more controlled and deliberate looking.

I assume they’re both versions of the same template/theme, yes? If not, wow.

Juked thinks, “I am a badass magazine,” that’s what they think. I agree.

Um, there’s a similarity with the homepages, certainly; but to be honest, a page with navigation at the top, a picture as a background and then made transparent so that the picture shows through isn’t exactly an unusual example of web design. I’ve seen that around for years. (There are a ton of sites that look like HTMLGIANT too …) Depending on what systems each magazine used to build their sites (I notice that Sotto Voce has Microsoft Frontpage in its source code), that could be another reason for similarities – web-building programs tend to only offer a rather homogenous range of templates.

Also, it’s worth adding that a site is more than its homepage: if you go into the content pages, they’re quite different: http://juked.com/2010/01/mrsgeronimo.asp compared to http://www.sottovocemagazine.com/content/2009/winter/blood_henna.htm

I looked at the HTML (out of curiosity, I used to do web stuff) and they’re different. I didn’t look to closely, though, but Sotto Voce was done using Microsoft’s Front Page. The designs are similar, but they’re not that out there that it wouldn’t surprise me if the similarities were coincidental.

I kinda see the similarity, although I don’t think it’s close enough to be much of an issue. Is it a Drupal template or something?

never mind, just saw matt k’s comment

I can see the similarity. I see the same degree of it though in elimae and McSweeney’s. But elimae’s style and size of font is better.
