Roxane Gay—
The tenth National Black Writer’s Conference is taking place March 25-28. Tayari Jones, Colson Whitehead, and Edwidge Danticat, among others will be participating. If you’re in NYC you might want to check it out. The conference is open to all and the panels look really interesting. Every time I hear someone say there aren’t many black writers I think, what on earth are you talking about?
I’m pretty sure most of these people will not be attending AWP. That’s worth talking about at some point.
Why do you think more black writers don’t attend AWP, Roxane? The ones you mentioned aren’t professors so far as I know (but I don’t know for sure), and they’re badass established and probably don’t want for professional contacts, so that’s probably why they don’t attend unless they’re getting paid. But is there some other reason you’re saying that more black writers don’t attend?

That’s a big question Kyle and I don’t quite know how to answer it.

Well, you said it was worth talking about, so I was trying to start talking about it, but then I realized I didn’t have anything to say, but it sounds like maybe you did, so I wanted to know what you had to say.

I do have something to say but I’ve only been to one AWP so I want to wait until after my 2nd AWP to confirm my thoughts and then I’m going to have a whole lot to say. (This is what I should have said earlier, sorry, I was being lazy.)

Let’s talk there, then, because I’m interested.

I’ve been debating it, but I’m on the no side right now because things are hectic here and I just went to New York last weekend. I want to however. Are you thinking of going?

“Politics of language,” “”Music as Language in African American Texts” and “The Impact of Hip Hop and Popular Culture in the Literature of Black Writers” sound interesting.
