i enjoyed eyes wide shut. it’s one of those movies where it’s such an interesting world that i wanted to explore it further, i’d almost be ok with it being longer. in general, love kubrick.
Hey Ken B …
As a big fan of both Marty and Stanley this was great. Thanks!
But that’s not the only reason I’m here … I finally got around to watching The Thin Red Line and The New World. (Terrence! Malick! Terrence Malick!) Both awesome, beautiful, visually lush and verbally spare. Just wanted to tell you. : )
Have a nice day!

Love Scorsese and like Kubrick a lot. But Eyes Wide Shut was one of the most unintentionally funny movies I’ve ever seen it was so bad. Sure, in all its technical aspect (cinematography, editing, etc.), it was masterfully done. It’s just that the story was lame (guy gets bent out of shape because his wife once got the hots for a sailor and so he must wander the night and encounters a “hidden” erotic world), the orgy was dull, the danger Cruise’s character was supposedly in was not at all apparent, and the score was Horror Movie over-the-top (“something…is…about…to…HAPPEN” or “LOOKOUT!”). Not to mention the complete lack of chemistry between Cruise and Kidman as husband and wife.
don’t be so sure it’s unintentional. ;) you don’t share kubrick’s taste in certain things, most likely. there’s a great quote from him concerning nicholson’s performance in the shining, about how a critic who thinks nicholson is “over the top” in that movie doesn’t appreciate the type of actor and performance that kubrick does. nothing in a kubrick movie is unintentional in the sense that you’re using the word.

Well, if he was going for stilted, he had the right cast.
In my view, the lack of emotion in Eyes Wide Shut makes for comical soft-core porn. But that’s just one person’s opinion. And I like Kubrick’s work overall. Just think this was not his best, to say the least.

I would think this would be completely obvious. But even if for whatever reason you don’t recognize the intent while watching the film, it shouldn’t matter.

No, wait. Nick Nolte yelled a lot. But the voices of narration were beautiful and spare.

I don’t know about that. Eyes Wide Shut is a very bad movie. It’s just very possible that Kubrick made a clunker.
My pleasure. I’m with you on EWS.
Awesome! Yeah, I really think they’re some of the most gorgeous and unique films around.
I think that the stiltedness of Eyes Wide Shut is really important.
kubrick was brilliant, love all of his work. period.

Eyes Wide Shut is not intended to be a realistic depiction of events. Knowing that helps one appreciate it.
