Elissa Bassist is just looking to get paid–a highly noble goal, and one you can help her meet by donating $2 when you read this story she wrote. You can also read it for free if you want to, by skipping straight to here. Can anyone explain to me how this doesn’t make Elissa Bassist the new Radiohead?

This really isn’t anything new. Smashwords has had the option for awhile to allow authors to make a “donate” button for their e-books; readers can donate whatever they feel is reasonable, or they can simply read the book for free. I can’t imagine it’s very successful, in terms of monetary value, but an interesting experiment. I’d even done something similar for a sf novella, making it available for free online, and the option to purchase a PDF with a bonus short story for 99 cents. Wasn’t very successful at all, though the free version got a lot of hits.

I know, I know, you’re just supporting a struggling young writer.

I had a dream last night that I had a friendly conversation with PHM about how we hadn’t seen each other for a while and how are you, man, oh that’s great to hear, now I’m your schoolfriend Sean for some reason. It was bizarrely vivid. At least, my memory of it is unusually so. I forget most of my dreams, now.
