Generation :( made me cringe. His label should’ve used quotation marks.
Also: “A generation gets the culture it deserves, and it’ll be interesting to see which blogging generation writers can make the leap from screen to page – and stay the distance.”
The natural point here is maybe the “screen” is the appropriate culture, and that this might not be a bad thing.

Always these Generations…
In last decades there were so many Generations, so perhaps we should use Kanji to be able to describe the futher generations. For example:
Generation 怠 for “Lazy Generation”
Generation 賢 for “Generation Wisdom”
or just
Generation 無 for “Generation Nothing”
And hey, there are over 50.000 Kanjis out there, so I suppose, we are adequately supplied, at least for some decades.

but seriously though, best thing about that blog post, in the comments section:
“In Iceland that generation (to which I belong) has been saddled with the moniker krúttkynslóðin which translates to the cutiepie generation. People that Anglophones would refer to as hipsters are called krútt, i.e. cutiepies.”

I totally agree that he’s actually right-on about a some of it… I like what one of their commenters said though:
“Surely the Culture a new generation gets, by and large, is the one it inherits from previous generations.
“The current generation of teens have inherited a culture where every institution has been systematically eroded and brought into disrepute – where few people have any trust in politicians, the media, the law – where those whose purpose is to help (the NHS, Social Workers, the Police etc) are regularly and publically vilified – where the Value of an individual is increasingly judged in monetary terms.
“They have been treated like glorified consumer units since their earliest years -encouraged to compete with their peers in how they dress, what games they play, what films they’ve seen, what they listen to, what celebrity they dress like, what technology they own – All dictated by the Media and Advertisers.
“So now they’re breaking away, finding new ways of using technology and they’re doing it so quickly that the media can’t keep up – and it worries the hell out of advertisers.”

while those people, others, myself, et al and etc does some of the things described and subsequently shit on (publicizing one another, publishing one another)
who does not? It’s much more self involved to claim that one is above such activity.

–“The Guardian’s book blog calls us “Generation Zzz””
Eh, what’s with this ‘us’ stuff? The ‘us’ in question is basically Muumuu Hse and its cronies. “Us”. Is this subliminal advertising or what? Tao should just cough up the $225.

I think the article implicated the youngish American internet literary scene in general… whether or not the writer was right to lump us all in one category is certainly up for debate, but we’re certainly a part of the mostly 20-somethings writing and reading stuff on the internet.
Really, I was just rabble-rousing, though. Us, them, you, Tao & co. To others it might seem like we’re part of the “co.” But yeah, Tao should give us money.

Some people who hang out here (well, me anyway) are part of Gen X (a stupid term). I’m not sure how a ‘generation’ is defined, but it seems odd that since my generation was named, there seem to have been five more generations and I’m only 35…

I just think it’s amazing that someone wrote a compare&contrast piece wherein Douglas Coupland was the “good guy.” Don’t see that one every day.

The world is a vampire.
He has a very good point. Lot of technically sophisiticated writers out there that are awfully boring.
