I Am Stupid When It Comes To Politics – Ignore Me

A few days ago, Shane Jones threatened to write an essay about the ‘politics’ of online writer’s blogs and the online lit scene in  a recent post on his blog. For the record, Shane Jones does not link to my own personal blog, but I link to him from my own personal blog. Co-Editor of The Cupboard, Adam Peterson, links to my own personal blog but I do not link to his personal blog. Darby Larson links to my personal blog, but I have not linked to his personal blog. Jereme has linked to my blog, but I have not linked to his. I have linked to Sam Pink’s blog, but he has not linked to me. Fuck Sam Pink.

In good news, I have linked to Matthew Simmons, and he has linked to me. I have linked to Kendra Grant Malone and she has linked to me. Congratulations, everyone.

Nowadays, there’s just so much out there! So many blogs to read! The internet is so busy! Look here and here for proof. Wow! And it’s so hard to copy and paste a web address and add it to your list of links on the side of your minima-black-themed blog. Who reads all of them anyhow? What’s the use? Eventually you just get overwhelmed. Laziness interecedes. Some people just type stupid shit and publish it. Sometimes it’s not even worth your time to click on or link to certain people. And sometimes you just want to show that asshole Blake Butler that you’re more picky than he is (Blake Butler links to EVERYONE!!!). Why not try to limit your scene? Save some time? Tao Lin is famous for this: he links to twelve people and is very picky as to who he links to based on some ‘life-affirming’ philosophy, I think. I could be wrong though. I recall a post he wrote about it. You’d have to dig it up. Google it or something.

But, really, who can we count on to back us up? Does this matter? Does linking to people matter?

Probably not. This is a lame post. I forgot what I really meant to type here. Politics and something. I don’t know. I am drunk.

I don’t think that I should link to Mark Sarvas. He won’t back me up. And I haven’t read Harry, Revised, nor do I plan to, but man, that guy must get a lot of hits…if only he could send some of that my way. Although, maybe he isn’t cool enough, and besides, his readers might not understand my waste-paper-throwing-game. Or maybe I’m not cool enough.

I’m bored with everyone. I want to read new things. I want to find new blogs and literary sites that I can read. What am I doing wrong? Why is my blogroll so lame?

Give me some links.

Some of us will never be cool. That’s where the politics come into play, right? In a lot of ways, it’s just like high school. The dorks need to unite.

Blake, being the proponent of the open node, should link to everyone, right? There is a lot of information, yes, but a good feed reader quickly sifts through the ones that provide value of some sort. I read a lot of blogs in my attempt to understand this scene. Some of them I quickly scan, others I read more than once.

Pretty much anyone who writes a blog just wants some attention paid to their words. In some cases the words aren’t good enough or of a sort that I enjoy, however in order to provide some measure of attention, I still skim them. One never knows when someone else will produce something that will change one’s life. No blog requires the same sacrifice of time as a novel. Give it. Be a giving person.

what is a good feed reader? part of the problem is i am not organized enough to read all of these blogs. nor did i realize that others had linked to me until i finally checked my analytics. i dont think i have guidelines for who i link to. it is mostly random and based on if i remember to do it or not or what i read online.

i am not complaining, i don’t think. but i mostly feel weird about all of this sometimes.

      i will link to brandon.

tao thank you for reading this.

      Ryan,
You should buy a Harley Davidson Sportster–I have a ’99. As for blogs, I don’t care to keep one because why bother. I teach and try to be a husband and dad and have to spend most of my free time writing fiction or stuff I like. That being said, I do read a few blogs: Blake’s, Tao’s, Kendra’s, a few others.

Link to someone who doesn’t link to you and who doesn’t know you fucking exist.

Link to someone outside a circle of about 12-24 people, which include your friends and editors of lit mags.

Link to a picture of a Harley Davidson Sportster.

Link to a blog of random nonsense or a blog about skateboarding or about White-fronted Capuchins.

Pick a Wikipedia article at random: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Randompage and post a link to it.

Read something besides fiction and lit magazines.

Like maybe something about splurge peepers and put a link to info on splurge peepers on your blogroll.

I link to anybody who has linked to myself or The Cupboard. I guess I’ve never really thought about who links back to me since my rationale for having a blog has always been a little fuzzy and I’d be afraid that maybe my grandma reads your blog and then she’ll see a link to my blog on your blog and then she’ll click it and then Thanksgiving and then we’ll talk about it and then I’ll feel self-conscious about what I write and then my grandma will start a blog and then she won’t link to mine and then Christmas and then we’ll talk about it and then she’ll admit that she finds what I have to say a little boring and then sad.

I don’t know why I think my grandma might read blogs. In any case, I’d be happy to link to grandma’s blog (or anyone’s, grandma or no).

my philospohy w/r/t linking started out Linish, in that I respect what Lin is doing, or maybe I don’t respect it but I admire it (?), it enforces the idea of loving only selected things and not everything, because there is something innately untruthful about loving everything, and Lin is being more honest, or is in a position to be honest and not I don’t know. So I wanted to do that, but I found myself reading more blogs than the small list I had. I kept piggybacking Blake’s list, and then I felt hypocritical, like okay I am actually reading all these other blogs, why don’t I link them. I am letting Blake be the scapegoat. So then I said if I ever piggyback Blake’s list more than twice I will just link that blog and not think about it anymore. My list is what I am calling it and nothing political, just blogs I frequent. I don’t care if anyone links me back, it isn’t, shouldn’t be, about that. So anyway, I like what Tao is doing, but Tao, I know you have to be reading more blogs than that, right? As soon as you start saying, what’s ‘good enough’ to be linked from ‘my’ blog, then the hat you’re wearing grows higher then everyone else’s hat, and who wants to wear hats that high?

Links and blogrolls don’t necessarily have anything do with “loving,” “innate untruthfulness,” “loving everything,” “hypocrisy,” “friends,” “politics,” “blogs I frequent,” “linking back,” “piggybacking,” “respecting what Lin is doing,” or “admiring what Lin is doing,” “good enough.”

Who dictates what you do with your blog, your links, your blogroll? Do you have original ideas sometimes?

Is it possible, perhaps, that links and blogrolls could be about “I think this is interesting,” “I think this is nice,” “I like Capuchin monkeys,” “I like randomness,” “I found this picture,” “I think this is funny,” “I feel morose,” or “sudden anxiety with brief to intermittent happiness.”

I am going to delete my current blogroll and add some of the most bizarre shit I can find on the Web right now.

As meaningless as we want them to ne, I think links have everything to do with all those things because human beings are social creatures and we are not used to walking around with declarations of who our friends on our sleeves. Exclusions can be as meaningful as inclusions, and when we set conditions, like I am only going to list ten people at any given time for the sake of the shortness of lists, then you are setting up a situation for people to compete for your sleeve, and that is kind of hatty (haughty) to me.

The other extreme has it’s downfalls also, listing everyone makes it seem like you have the inability to dislike anyone, or that you refuse to make choices, so being on your sleeve doesn’t really mean anything because everyone is there anyway.

None of this what we want, because they should just be lists absent of conditions, but we are human and social so we apply social conditions by nature.

Was someone going to write an essay on all this? Maybe I will do it.

Apparently, we are dealing with a different species of “social creatures” than humans here: the eusocial writer.

Bees, ants, wasps, and naked mole rats are also eusocial. In this complex social structure, only one writer (“the queen”; which may be male or female) and one to three males reproduce, while the rest of the members of the colony function as workers. The workers are divided along a continuum of different worker-caste behaviors instead of discrete groups. Some function primarily as tunnellers, expanding the large network of tunnels within the burrow system, and some primarily as soldiers, protecting the group from outside predators

Hail Comrades! What fine naked mole rats Capitalist Communism has spawned!
