NEW HTMLGIANT

mwork

The new site will go live this weekend, unless my wife has a baby.

If you have any observations or criticism in regards to the new site (and give me a little while to get it all working), please flame me in this post.

Love you guys, and I hope my small changes improve your overall HTMLGIANT experience.

I think I might have liked the plain-text header better. But the rest of the site definitely looks less “bland”.

gene, i liked the old sidebars, with the links to contributors and the instant searching of posts by topic
but i think the new header and footer are slammin.

I love the logo. I want to put on a flared white suit, get myself a cheap and tawdry cocktail, and disco dance the night away. (Or at least I would, if I didn’t only have one leg.)

Can you add script that automatically triggers the sound of a thunderous a-bomb explosion heard behind an elderly man screaming “YESS!! YES!! YEESS!! YEEESSS!! YESSS!! NOOO!! NOO!! YEESSSS!! YEESSS!! NNO!! YEESSSSS!!” every time you open one of Jimmy Chen’s posts?

I think it would introduce the appropriate amount of depth / awesomeness one needs to adjust for when confronting his work.

      I’m not being sarcastic.

      it’s very nice!

my favourite part is how the descriptive blurb is 3 inches to the right of it’s previous location, thus allowing for instant unbridled access to the most recent post.

not sure if I like the black background though. it reveals a thick frosting of dust which clings to my screen.of which I was previous unaware.

also not sure about the “most recent comments” section. I see it on other sites a lot but find it to be pretty much useless. I think that a better/similar section for the space would be “most popular [responded to] comments” or something like that.

Initially I hated it. The old design was so clean, simple, without pretense or pretension. This looked like a bad disco motif to me. But, as today has worn on, it has started to grow on me.

hey gene, is there any reason you took the dates away from the posts? personally the dates were really helpful for when i wanted to go back and reread a post for whatever reason and couldn’t remember the details, but had a vague sense of its temporal context.

  96. Gene Morgan

The individual pages have the exact date, and I didn’t really consider why someone would need it on the main page. You’re right though, I added the day of the week to the index pages to help you find recent stuff. Thanks for pointing that out.

We didn’t want to overload the site with too many sidebar links.

You can still find category links on the individual post pages, underneath the author name.

I considered putting “says” after every name, but it’s pretty redundant and useless. I’m pretty sure everyone realizes that it’s you speaking, no matter how I break that up. If I used a colon, it’d be just as arbitrary.

Maybe “Rachel says,” with a comma would be more book-like. I’m not sure that gets the point across any better though.

I don’t really mind explaining my design choices. If I can’t justify my reasoning to people in the comments, then it’s probably flawed. I get a lot out of the process.
