Literary Doppelgangers: Nietzsche’s moustache and bison
Whenever I feel bad I like to browse pictures of Nietzsche because he always looks so miserable. Missouri loves company, so I don’t understand why AWP isn’t held in St. Louis. But I digress. His aphorisms cut nobody any slack. I feel if I met him at a bar, he’d punch me in the face. I think of his deathbed photo and wonder if he did any last minute bargaining with a God he killed for a nice tagline. (The Gay Science, in which he says “God is dead,” is not about anal sex — bear with me, I’m setting up a pun.) Is man merely a mistake of God’s? Or God merely a mistake of man’s?” he also asks. This is supposed to be a quick doppelganger post, so I won’t get too into it, I just think it’s funny how atheists (myself included) seem resentful towards a God they don’t believe in. I guess I’m technically agnostic, which is a philosophical way of saying I have no fucking clue. If there is a God, I don’t think he’s worried about the membership, so I figure either way I’m doing okay. So God bless America, and enjoy the rest of your weakend.

nietzsche was a religous, or more accurately, god-intoxicated man. his moustache is proof of that. it was science and modern society who had unknowingly killed god. nietzsche was nearly destroyed by this realization. it was only faith in his moustache that saved him. yet the burden was too great, and in the end it gnawed away at his core until his mind was nothing but a puddle of neon.
when the godless children also come to this realization, and embrace it in the face of the void into which we have been thrown, of which we have unwittingly played a role in creating, together we will all ride the bison into the promiseland. and there will be chesse and crackers for all. in chen’s name, let us pray.

if eternal recurrence is a moustache, then time cube is a toupee. if nietzsche was saved by his faith in the almighty Moustache, then likewise this dr gene ray is saved by faith in Toupee. that much i would concur. but here we must part ways. for by the scalpel of the pre-trans fallacy we might split hairs about the nature of Moustache and Toupee–in this, and only this, are they similar: each obscures the face.

to be honest, at first i thought i was reading a burroughs-style cut-up of a new ben marcus text. there’s a really facinating parallel occuring now between theory construction (as it appears in the sciences and philosophy) and literature. basically, rationalism (reasoning void of empirical constraints, other than a set of givens culled from primary experience) resembles more a style of literature than an inquiry of knowledge. gene ray is a prime example (just another math crank (with little math skills), math cranks are good examples too) of where the boundary between non-fiction and fiction begins to break down and bleed into one another. i think he’d be big in the indie scene. he should publish a chapbook.
