Wesley Willis’s Joy Rides

i went and saw jellow biafra do a spoken word in tallahassee once and i showed up like an hour and a half early. besides me, the only other people there were FSU’s Green Party members. jello biafra had the same five wesley willis songs repeating over and over the entire time before he came on stage and these political science major’s had no fucking clue what it was. listening to these “intellectuals” try and figure out what was “really going on” is still one of the funniest things i have ever witnessed.

I think he enjoyed at least his last few years. He stayed with a friend of mine for a while, so we got to hang out with him some–and he always seemed to just really enjoy the hell out of life and what he was doing. I don’t want to get all simplistic and condescending, because I’m sure there were many times he was in a very dark place, and his anger seemed real sometimes–but I do think he genuinely loved making music and entertaining people. WW, RIP, dude.

Wesley used to call the record store where I worked nearly every day. I’d pick up the phone and say:
“Exclusive Company, this is Kevin.”
“Hello?”
“Hi, Wesley!” (You could tell Wesley immediately.)
“Hello, is this the Exclusive Company?”
“Yes it is, Wesley.”
“Well, this is Wesley Willis.”
“Hi, Wesley.”
“You sell any of my CDs today?”
“Maybe, Wesley. Want me to check?”
And then he’d ask for the store manager, and talk to him for a while.
I saw a couple of the Wesley Willis Fiasco’s first shows. He played with The Didjits and a band called Blood, Guts, and Firetrucks in Green Bay. He wrote a song about Blood, Guts, and Firetrucks just fir the show. I’ll leave you to guess the lyrics.

I really enjoyed this documentary…couldn’t believe it when he went to Cheyenne, Wyoming and said he loved it there. That’s where I grew up!

thanks blake – so good to see his face – that there is right about at the corner of damen, north and milwaukee – i lived in wicker park for 10+ years – he was a good egg, ww…makes me so sad, and yet so happy to see his face again, random…what picture did you get blake, post it up! i swore i was going to steal the one at the burger king down on milwaukee, but i never did – so many times i saw him sketching, dammit, i should have bought some art, shown some more support – i was always scared to head bump with him, the growl, i’d forgotten that…but it seemed to make him happy, or at the minimum, was just his way of saying hi – sigh…that’s how i remember him though, in this picture

Reviewer comparisons to IN THE REALMS OF THE UNREAL & THE DEVIL AND DANIEL JOHNSTON seem right–as those two films are essential viewing.
