Today at Coop’s Place: It’s MIKE YOUNG Day!
Highlights of the Day include several more videos of MY’s music project, The Cinnamon Urns, plus links to Young-authored literature around the web, and excerpts from the MC Oroville chapbook. Of course, every day is MIKE YOUNG DAY in the collective heart of this blog, but a thousand cheers to you all the same. And bonus points to anyone who catches the titular reference in the video in this post. Double bonus points to anyone who posts a link to the *other* song that borrows that line for a title. (I’ll give you a hint: It’s much much worse than Mike’s song.) ((Triple bonus points for anyone who heard the phrase “Mike’s Song,” and instantly thought “Weekapaug Groove,” then felt a little bad inside, but also a little good.))
Bay Area Reading Tour
Contributors Mike Young, Chelsea Martin, and myself, along with ‘associate’ Brandon Scott Gorrell will be reading at some places in the Bay Area. This is what is known in the internet world as “irl” (in real life). If you’re around, please come and say hello, but be nice, we are not ready for irl altercations. Mike is coming from Massachusetts [follow his tour]; Brandon is coming down from Seattle [follow his tour]; Chelsea and I live in the area.
The Lives of Others: at the art opening
Mike Young came to San Francisco a few weeks ago. We didn’t document the experience, but it just so happened that we were ‘in the way’ while a picture was being taken for a website that documents SF art openings (scroll down to Rosenthal Gallery).
Anyway, in the vein of Selections from the Giant family photo album, I figure I’d consolidate our conversation into four snippets. Out of modesty and restraint, the photos are after the break.

Friends, our own Mike Young NEEDS YOUR HELP! His essay “It Ain’t Me, Babe” is in the running for Best Nerve.com Feature of 2008. The competition is fierce. Right now Rachel Shukert’s essay about spending the night in a crappy lovenest in Nebraska is in the lead, with some bullshit about Stuff White People Like trailing not far behind it, but as you’ll see when you go over there, the vote-count is pretty low across the board so a decent influx of GIANT voters could seriously tip things Mike’s way. Also, FYI, you can only vote for each essay once, but you are allowed to vote for more than one essay.
I also gave a vote to “Triangulation” by Caitlin Macrae. It’s a piece about threesomes. She seems to really hit the nail on the head about what makes them so alluring, and she seems to like them even more than I do, which is seriously saying something.
