Does anyone know about the history of ‘poetry reading’ practice? What the origins of the ‘standard-type’ contemporary poetry reading? Have (American) poetry readings always looked like they do now? When did people start having a colleague/peer/friend of the reader introduce the reader? Why aren’t poetry readings like rock concerts? (And why are rock concerts like rock concerts?)

Some poetry readings are like rock concerts. For instance, Derrick Brown and the authors he publishes on Write Bloody. All of these authors are required to tour. Most of them come from the “slam” community, which understandably has its detractors, but it’s still a model worth looking at.

Well, I disagree, a lot of reading intros the people mean, BUT:

      They ALL suck.

Can someone make the extreme shift of NO intros to readings??? NONE. Please.

      Just let the person read.

      Where did this even start?

      Let the person read.

I recently did a reading for a traveling art gallery and they just said, “attention everyone, we’re reading poetry and shit over here,” and handed me the mic.

writing a good introduction is almost as hard to write as a good poem, but possible

more introducers just need to remember “it’s not about me” and they’ll be fine

also it would be nice if they were honest, and offered some unique take on the reader, not boilerplate cv litanies or boilerplate poetry praise

rock concerts are the way they are because it sells rock hardest that way — poetry readings are the way they are for the same reason i’d guess — friends giving introductions makes sense in the sense that most of a poet’s audience are his or her friends

The last introduction that I did had the word “semen” in it like five times. I think they work best when you just make a lot of jokes and warm people up for the reader.

“Why aren’t poetry readings like rock concerts?”

      Why should they be?

      Why aren’t bagels like hamburgers?

I feel like an intro shouldn’t’ be any longer than a bio in most circumstances. Just there sentences or so, please.

yes but dont make too many jokes, and dont be funnier (or more poetic) than the reader

oh and all your jokes have to celebrate them, not yourself — it’s actually a cool challenge to make jokes that don’t showcase your own wit

surrrrre–maybe. shorter is almost always better….. but sometimes a poet sucks so bad (or is awesome but in a difficult-to-understand-how way) you gotta argue harder and longer for the power and relevance of their verse so the audience can be swayed……
