Where the Words Come From: A Gmail Fuckoff about Getting Work Done

Ryan:  wat else you doing rightnow?
like this instant what ar eyou doing!
i am always curious what you do

Sent at 1:45 PM on Thursday
me:  haha
i was laying on the bed
then i got back up and saw your msg
i got up cuz i thought of a sentence for this collab thing i am trying to finish a draft of
Ryan:  haha
i see
you just think sentences?
i dont think sentences
i dunno
i cant
my brain
i dunno
me:  well i have a set of images the thing is ending with
and i had a sentence that resolves one of them occur
yeah i think entirely in sentences mostly
but often based out of an initial image or situation of images
so the sentence kind of falls out of the image in specific words
but i dont really think about the words
or the image
Ryan:  huh
i need to be like
actively typing
in order for a sentence/language to happen
otherwise
it is like
just an echo of
aaaaaaa
or
bedpost
or
some other word
me:  hm
Ryan:  or sound
in my head
me:  do you ever leave somethin gyou are working on and go into another room and have some word or movement of it occur to you
that you then have to hold in your head to get back to type down before it changes
Ryan:  no
me:  weird
Ryan:  yeah
it is weird
me:  all the important shifts in a text come to me that way usually
otherwise when i am typing i just operate within the mode of that idea
if i dont get up i can just go on and on in a motion
that’s why i get up a lot
unless i want that specific ongoing wave
Ryan:  huh
when i am working
i will write frm that wave
the sentences
like but if i get stuck
i cant do anything so ill leave it alone
but its never like
me:  and then when you come back?
Ryan:  a setnence appears in my head
and i have to go back
huh
i just come back the next night
me:  so you get stuck
and when you come back
you pick up in the wave where you left off?
Ryan:  well
when i come back
me:  but maybe a little different?
Ryan:  i retype
the draft i have into a new file
making changes to language as i go
then i hope the wave comes
me:  wow, really?
every time?
Ryan:  when i get ot the previos point
usually every time
unless the story is already long
in which case
ill just
retype that page or soomehing
me:  damn
Ryan:  to get the language drip
me:  that seems insane to me
Ryan:  i think that is why i am slow
yeah
me:  haha
Ryan:  it is probably not the best method
but i just have foudn that
i cannot think of sentences
like i cannot work out language in my head
away from the text
me:  interesting
i guess it makes sense in the way your stories work
there is a formal logic
though you usually bury it under voice
Ryan:  yeah
me:  like you seem more like lutzian
that you have to have the clay to play with
in your hands
that’s me assuming lutz does that
Ryan:  how is that lutzian?
doesnt he like
me:  he stares at sentences
Ryan:  just sit on the floor
and think of a sentence
me:  no, that’s when he’s not writing
Ryan:  ooooh
me:  i think he just stares at sentences
Ryan:  yeah
me:  and fucks with them
Ryan:  yeah
plays with them
me:  i prefer the word fuck
Ryan:  haha
the one thing im realizing is i havent really moved away from plot at all
like
i dunno
they feel really plotty
me:  but its voice driven plot
Ryan:  but i never like think of a plot necessarily
right
whereas yours
like makes sense
the image of foundation
leading to the sentences
like
all of that in EVER
the house
space
me:  right, it’s more a feeling out
the logic comes out of the sound
rather than the sound comes out of logic
or at least in greater ratio that way
Ryan:  i want to write a novel
me:  you should
Ryan:  i will!
me:  you will

      “i need to be like

Me too. My fingers are almost as important as my brain. The tactile act helps to make the sentences.

My style is more like Blake’s, except I use pen and paper rather than typing. Just flows easier, plus there’s no distraction from the internet and stuff.

I often use music to continually change gears. I play the right thing for the mood of the story sometimes, the wrong thing for the mood others. Sometimes I turn it off, sometimes I turn it on loud, sometimes I use headphones. Sometimes I miscalculate and put myself to sleep this way. Lose a day of productivity.

i find myself walking into the kitchen and grabbing cookies when i’m stuck on a sentence. it’s awful.
