The direction in my life right now that I’m trying to I guess proceed with in the business is gradually from being the little boy, from the younger, you know, brother, trying to get to be the older brother or the only brother.
And who doesn’t feel that? Me, certainly. Why did Tao Lin start Muumuu House? Older brother. Year of the Liquidator? Older brother.
At what point did you decide you wanted to be the “older brother”? (And I apologize for the maleness of the metaphor. I would like sisters to answer, too.) Have you decided yet?

As the youngest brother I must admit that I hated my brothers for existing at all after adolescence. Not that I wanted to be an only child but that I no longer wished to be a child, to abandon those things in the eyes of those who still referred to me by my childhood nicknames. So in order to move on, I’ve abandoned them all, brothers, sisters, parents – only in the most symbolic way, except for one who was in the most actual way and not symbolic at all. Now that this was done and received properly after a few years of doing/not-doing or abandoning/not-abandoning, I am not a little brother or a younger or an older or big brother but an equal brother to all. I think I am still dealing with the loss of Mark Linkous and cannot hope to be altered by Corey’s OD.

I was born the oldest and have been trying to be the youngest ever since. It’s worked pretty well. I’ve been disappointing my family’s expectations in every way for years. I think I’ve finally achieved “younger sister” now, though, since my younger sibs have the houses and the career paths and the other adult stuff and I…do not. It’s very freeing.

I got in a fight with my older brother when I was 13. I threw a TV remote control at him, hit him in the spine with a pool cue and swing a freeweight at him. I bloodied his nose in a sanctioned boxing match when I was 20. I think I stopped being jealous of him around age 25 or so. Now we just battle over how each other is running their respective businesses.
