I know Blake. I don’t know what I think. Just quoting her. I guess I don’t think it was the smartest thing, but maybe that’s OK. A vulnerable moment- losing her temper. Just being a human.

justin, its on the fence blog fenceportal.org
you have to go down a bit in it, but its in response to a contributor who never got their copies and is kind of aggressive about it. it’s a weird convo. but i still think she had every right to be frustrated, and to say whatever she wants.

I’m with her 100%. And 200% for blogging it. She should have left the guy’s name on there.

pay just $17 if you want your submission responded to within one year, $30 if you want to wait two years, and $300 if you never want hear back from Fence. No thanks, I’d rather watch beckie coyote eat feces and die.

does she have much of an ass, barry? from a pic of her she looks pretty gaunt in the face. i imagine if she put her ass on his face he might get his eyes poked out with her butt bones. but you’re the #2 perv around her, so i guess you’d know

tr and ‘way to kiss some a’ – anonymous comments are for goons. my guess is the 2 of you are the same person, and i’ll put 3 to 1 odds on that you’re both the guy RW told off. if i’m right on the trifecta, i feel like i deserve a prize. email me via my website and we can talk about what you can send me. also, since RW seems to imply that you are reasonably well-known, are we friends in real life? wouldn’t that be hilarious!

‘way to kiss some a’ might be the poet rw told off, but he’s not me. i’m just a lowly submitter who never got a response when I submitted to fence. so you and rw can fuck off.

looks like you lose your bet with yourself

tr- fair enough. But seriously, your anger is misplaced. (1) FENCE has passed on my work too–so what? why bring the venom here? or do you haunt all FENCE-related internet comment threads? (2) anonymous comments are still super lame.

That really is a shame about my bet, though consolation for me is that in the interim I figured out who the anonymous poet is.

non responses and 1 year+ responses are the norm at fence, so venom seems deserved. and i don’t hunt for fence posts, i saw this by chance cuz i occasionally read this blog. anonymity is lame to you, but it suits me fine….what else?

oh, sorry about your bet too, althought it doesn’t really make sense that waytokisssomea would make two separate posts when he could get it all out in one. but who knows if he really is the poet who was told off or another anonymous goon. If rw wrote that to me, i would (1) be at least grateful for getting a response, and then (2) erase fence from my life, including making blog comments. as for me, i just don’t submit to fence anymore.

      peace man

i figured that he was trying to make it seem like there were more people than there were. i dont know. you’re more than entitled to your fence-related opinion. and yes, it can be very frustrating when magazines don’t respond to subs. thanks for reading, at any rate, and peace to you too.

SEE, THE BIG PROBLEM IN INDEPENDENT LITERATURE IS THAT THE WRITER ONLY WANTS TO SUPPORT THE MAGAZINE OR THE PRESS IF THE MAGAZINE OR THE PRESS IS INTERESTED OR ‘POTENTIALLY INTERESTED’ IN PUBLISHING THEIR WORK.

IF YOU WERE INTERESTED IN MAGAZINES AND BOOKS FOR THE WORK INSIDE THEM AND NOT THE POTENTIALLY OF HAVING YOUR WORK INSIDE THEM, YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY HAVE AN INTEREST, YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY ‘GET SOMEWHERE.’

I AM TIRED OF WRITERS WHO DO NOT READ, BUY, OR EVEN REALLY GIVE A FUCK ABOUT WRITING EXCEPT WHEN IT IS THEIRS. AND UNFORTUNATELY THAT SEEMS A LOT OF THE CROWD. THANKS TO GOD NOT THE LOT ENTIRELY.

AS FOR THOSE AMONG THOSE: EAT SHIT AND DIE, ETC. AMEN.

i dont know man. its not that what you’re saying isnt true of people, its that you say “the writer” as if its all inclusive.

i dont think that was the case with the eat shit and die. i think it was two people who were frustrated that their individual, respective efforts were not being acknowledged by the other. it was probably just a case of things missing in the mail and people got friustrated. as far as the eat shit and die response. i wouldnt have responded that way but thats just me. the fence folks are free to do as they wish.

in ‘the writer’ i think, obviously, i meant the kind of writer i refer to later in the post

my diatribe was relative to the comments here about long response times in submissions = no interest in subscriptions

the eat shit and die guy i thought was out of line before she was, and got personal, which is ridiculous. fence has done a lot for indie lit, and made a lot of good issues. people are so quick throw others under the bus when things don’t go the way they want.

i don’t think i would have necessarily responded that way either honestly, but i don’t blame her for getting tired of crap. she probably gets more of it than you average editor.

“my diatribe was relative to the comments here about long response times in submissions = no interest in subscriptions”

you’re right, absolutely. that is shitty.

year plus response times. i dont know. i have been ignored by plenty of editors, that doesnt mean the quality of their journal is lessened. it still may be great. i think the thing is, people feel ignored, disrespected, and i can understand how someone takes that personally and doesnt want to support a project that disrespects them or ignores them. i mean how hard is it to acknowledge someone.

i remember a post you did on your own blog awhile back where you discussed being an open node and you called for (among other things) people to contact an author if you read something great of theres and say, hey, i just read this piece, nice work. and i think you were correct in calling for that. are you saying now that it should be ok for the person who received the congratualtions to ignore the person. i know you dont think thats right. i remember a long time ago before i read your blog or really even published any stories i read your ryan steakhouse piece in hobart and i thought it was bad ass and i sent you an email and told you i liked it. and you responded promptly and i appreciated it. vut a small part of me says that if you didnt return my email and at least acknowledge that i paid you a compliment, that you were somehow disrespecting me or you didnt think i was worth your time. and i acn understand how a person submitting to a journal can feel that same way.

i knwo everyone has the right to responf to people as they please. believe me i am all for doing whatever the fuck you want. but i jjust dont understand disrespect and cruelty and ignoring people. to me thats just shitty, no matter how you slice it.

no i agree with you barry, I think it sucks when someone goes out of their way to tell you they like your work and you ignore it. that really leaves a bad taste.

at the same time, i think there’s a difference between someone writing to say they like your work, and someone writing an editor of a magazine and asking q’s in relation to the publication. it’s a different proposition. not that that does not deserve an answer, but patience should be taken, and as i remember rebecca followed up with the person thinking she had sent the issue and the guy had moved or something. i don’t know.

that open node post, too, it’s something i strive for, but lives are lives. people too easily get upset over their own small kinks and waits and forget that there’s a hell of a lot of work in the middle, and i think mostly a lot of people are really trying to keep up, but life is a bitch. i don’t know. some kind of middle. as in: just as much as i think publishers and etc should do as much as they can to stay on top, i think writers should learn to relax and take everything with a grain of salt, as many do.

I think, and not that this is a big deal cuz I don’t seek to publish myself much anyhow, so I’m just going to say it here, after all these comments, and all these commas, ,,,,,,, cuz I’ve been thinking about it a lot, that because I like publishing other people most of all most of the time, and it feels weird cuz someday I’m going to be submitting to people who write and could conceivably submit work to me, and because it was good enough for Bennett Cerf, that here’s the deal –I’m not going to submit any writing anymore anywhere, at least until our boys are home from Iraq.

We don’t need more voices, we need more microphones. We need filtering microphones that will eliminate bad writing (I quit with the metaphor).

And the only reason I say “most of the time” is because publishing is fucking hard, stressful and stuff, and you can never get enough done, and so I stand behind Rebecca Wolff because I bet it was a big relief to say what she said. When I make the big time I’m going to tell everyone to never email me ever.
