Stranger Than Fiction?

Sorry, this is funny. Good spirit. But funny.

Song of the day? Converge? Trying to figure out the perspective here. On a Wallace review video for the recent Pale King excerpt he talks about how you can mention “DFW” at a hipster party when people are talking about “hipster lit” like Bolano and Lispector. F’real?

Thoughts?

Those people aren’t hipster lit, but they are lit hipsters like, probably.

maybe his opinions have merit, but we’ll never know, because his articulation is shit

the only “system” needed to evaluate literature is a nimble vocabulary

get a job teaching, where you have to persuade your audience of your opinion by scooping them up in the loving arms of compelling presentation — specificity, examples, continual representation of the idea from multiple angles — for five years, then speak, critic

he ‘cross posted’ the video review on sfaa’s amazon page

after i linked it on my blog/twitter sales on amazon increased considerably, i think

unsure if other factors increased the sales

this man suffers from “happy hands”

i couldn’t stop staring at his pen, or what he was doing with his pen. and when he dropped the pen, i cringed something terrible.

has converge broken through to the mainstream? do they appeal to the button-down crowd?

      what is a hipster?

i’d say they’re hipster lit, but not exclusively hipster lit. just because the ‘intellectual-hipster’ demographic wears those authors like a badge it doesn’t devalue them at all.

that/s not true jack. and you know it. you can/t throw in the nazz and not mention mishima. i had to read the sailor who fell from grace with the sea in high school and it/s what inspired me to start a gang. my gang was me and a bunch of guys who also wanted to start a gang because of mishima/s book. all of us were the leader of the gang. that/s the bloody part. the last one to die gets to be leader.

man, this is weird. the guy meanders through his intro for more than half the video, then doesn’t say much specifically at all, or the points he does try to address he does so in about 30 seconds, and they’re vague: “it doesn’t do it for me… I don’t feel for the characters… it’s not joyce or shakespeare.” seriously??? seems like deeply lazy wannabe lit crit.

why is it that people put out vlogs w/ no attempt at quality presentation, or like mark put it, articulation? is it supposed to be more authentic because it’s unrehearsed (i.e., sloppy)?

given tao’s comment, though, I guess this proves that all publicity is good publicity, eh?

      too strange…
